Printer Sharing on XP/Vista Network

It took me 2hrs to figure out how to share my HP printer to 2 computers (Desktop PC & Laptop) which using 2 different operating system (Desktop - XP, Laptop – Vista).

I have to change the workgroup to make both on the same workgroup because by default Vista will be on WORKGROUP while my XP Pro is MSHOME.

Then go to Control Panel or Network Sharing.. choose Add Printer..

Choose Add a Local Printer instead of Network Printer.

Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port (Do not change that) Just click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the
\\computer_name\printer_name

**Check your Norton Firewall/Security setting so those PC can be connected. I just hate Norton because sometimes it doesn’t show the pop-up screen asking to accept these two connections.

The disadvantage of Vista for this Printer Sharing is it think printers on an intranet are local.
